Importance of Good Manners In Islam

The Issue of good manners is very important, because it is the foundation of our daily life through which we can achieve success and a distinctive place in Islamic community.  A father cannot lead a happy life, nor can a husband have prosper martial life unless they possess good and sound manners in dealing their family members. If a person, who is calling others to the way of Allah, is not well-mannered, cannot be successful in his mission. Every person can achieve great success in his/her life by having and dealing people with noble and praised manners. Dealing others with good manners means to put them at ease by the way that Islam urged us to deal with. It is not only the essential part of our religion but also makes our social life more pleasant. So this topic is more important than what we think. Some scholars say about this issue that the religion consists of good manners and morality.

The word “Khalq” linguistically means creation, and the word “Khuluq” means manners and morals, and they both are inter-related. The former word refers to the physical appearance of a person that one can see, while the latter one refers to the deep inner self of a person that can be realized by insight. And both have good and bad characteristics. Both the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned this issue and highly praised those who possess good manners. Allah praised his Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) in the Holy Quran and said: “And verily, you (O Muhammad PBUH) are on an exalted standard of character.” (Al-Qalam 68:4) The Prophet (PBUH) himself urged his followers to possess and practice good manners and abstain from the bad ones. It is narrated that Abdullah bin ‘Amr (May Allah be pleased with him) said: “Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) was neither a Fahish (one who talks evil) nor a Mutafahhish (a person who conveys evil talk or a person who peaks obscene evil words to make people laugh), and he used to say, ‘The best among you are the best in character (having good manners).’” (Al-Bukhari 6035) Making peace among the people, assisting one to ride an animal or to load his luggage on, speaking mild words, advising people to offer compulsory and optional prayers( especially night prayer), maintaining family ties, spreading greeting of peace among the people, feeding the hungry, treating the poor and orphans with compassion, taking care for the Muslims affairs, being chaste in eating, drinking and dressing and marrying, spending in Allah’s Cause, show kindness to wife, being good to neighbours, guarding secrets, politeness in speech, and honoring the guests, are from the good manners that the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) encouraged us to have and to deal the people with. Since the Prophet (PBUH) is a role model for the Muslims to be followed, was endowed with great and good manners. Allah made him the best and perfect example for the people and sent him only for the purpose of perfecting good morals. He (PBUH) practically approved that purpose in dealing with good manners both with his companions and the enemies. Allah says: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad PUBH) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.” (Al-Ahzab 33:21) We ask Almighty Allah to make us to follow the footsteps of the Prophet (PBUH) and deal with the people in a way that he dealt with, because Allah made it the essential part of the Faith without which our Faiths cannot be completed.
